There were many iconic Space and Aviation achievements in the 20th Century and the '199 flights of the three X-15 rocket powered aircraft produced' were certainly majorly successful research and development flights that captured critically important information for the future about flying to the edge of the flight performance envelope at the edge of the Earth's atmosphere. The X-15 was also the First Winged Space Vehicle to be flown back from Space, and by the end of 1961, the X-15 had achieved its design goals of Mach 6 and had achieved altitudes in excess of 200,000 feet, then going on to further fantastic records. In October 1967 "Pete" Knight piloted the rocket-powered X-15A-2 to a speed of 4,520 miles per hour, more than Mach 6, six times the speed of sound. This is distinct from an air speed record, because the X-15 record necessitates a pilot, and the record remains unbroken to this day. [The famed SR-71 represents the fastest piloted jet flight since Knight's famous hypersonic flight half a century ago, though the SR-71 never quite reached 3,000 miles per hour.] On August 22, 1963, Walker achieved an altitude record for piloted aircraft, taking the X-15 to 354,000 feet (more than 67 miles). The 'Space Shuttle' was not the first Space vehicle to fly the 'First Flown’ Re-Entries' from Space. The very first ‘flown’ Re-Entries to a designated landing point from Space was achieved by the little known X-15 Program of the 1960's which created speed and altitude World Records that still remain unbroken to this day. The X-15 literally carved the Aviation and Space future that we have today! Please order now and make this fantastic historical model yours! This is a 'best value' larger 1/72 scale model!Model Details: Box: Very Good Condition with a few minor creases. (source Wikipedia) The North American X-15 is a hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft that was operated by the United States Air Force and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as part of the X-plane series of experimental aircraft. The X-15 set speed and altitude records in the 1960s, crossing the edge of outer space and returning with valuable data used in future aircraft and spacecraft design. During the X-15 program, 12 pilots flew a combined 199 flights. Of these, 8 pilots flew a combined 13 flights which met the Air Force spaceflight criterion by exceeding the altitude of 50 miles (80 km), thus qualifying these pilots as being astronauts. The 5 Air Force pilots qualified for military astronaut wings immediately, while the 3 civilian pilots were eventually awarded NASA astronaut wings in 2005, 35 years after the last X-15 flight. An example is the premier diecast models like these. All production 'runs' are limited with no guarantee of more. Consequently, over time they become Limited Editions in their own right. Some models may be 're-launched' on significant anniversaries.I suggest that when an opportunity presents itself, decide on your model collection and act!Limited Editions are examples!Notes: This is serious and enjoyable premium quality Space and Aviation Collecting.
