Description: Original Item: One Available. This is a Type G-1 Crew Oxygen tank, as used on the B-17, B-24, and possibly other bombers. It is marked BREATHING OXYGEN on one end, and is painted the correct green color used on these tanks. They were in service for many years, so like this example most we see are either missing all of their paint, or have been painted over several times. In the days of modern jet travel, many forget that during WWII pressurized cabins were not used by bombers. At altitudes over 10,000 feet, the crew all had to rely on pressurized oxygen to keep from blacking. All crew members needed to be on a mask, so pressurized oxygen was kept in large tanks such as this.On this example, unfortunately most of the original markings have been painted over or scuffed off, but we can still see some remnants of these Type G-1 specs that used to read:INTERNAL VOLUME 2100 CUBIC INCHESAVAILABLE OXYGEN FROM 400TO 50 POUNDS PER SQUARE INCHPRESSURE = 29 CUBIC FEETThe tank measures 25"L x 12 1/4" and weighs about 20lbs. In good condition and ready to display!
