Product Description VDG Militaria strives to accurately represent all items listed. Below are the details for this specific product:The Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen) was first instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II on March 3, 1918, to honor German soldiers who had been wounded or injured in combat during World War I. It came in three grades: Black, Silver, and Gold. The Black grade was awarded for one or two wounds, Silver for three or four, and Gold for five or more wounds, or for severe injuries like the loss of a limb or permanent disability. The Wound Badge in Black quickly became one of the most common decorations awarded during WW1, given the vast number of soldiers wounded in the grueling trench warfare that characterized the conflict. Veterans would often wear this badge for life, and during the Third Reich, wounded veterans were allowed to exchange their WW1 wound badges for a newly designed version, though many chose to keep their original medals. The stick pin version allowed veterans to wear the badge with less formality, often pinned on civilian attire during gatherings or veteran events. The legacy of the Wound Badge continued into World War II, with a similar design being reissued for wounded soldiers during the Second World War. This makes the WW1 Wound Badge a significant symbol of both individual sacrifice and the broader experience of soldiers in one of the most devastating wars in human history.
