Description: Original WW1 (1917) SERBIAN map entitled "TEMИШBAP" (TIMISOARA, Romania) which was once part of the private collection of ALAN GRANT OGILVIE (see below for further details). When Serbia eventually fell in late 1915, its Army retreated to continue their fight with the Allies against the Central Powers. Romania, however, managed to remain neutral for the first two years before siding with the Allies and then falling to the Central Powers in late 1917. This map is a 'Provisional Edition' of 1917 and covers TIMISOARA and its surrounding area, including a stretch of the border with Hungary. (I've done some preliminary work on translating the Serbian Cyrillic in the margins, but any help with a full translation would be gratefully received.) It's one of seven Serbian maps which I'm listing from this period that belonged to OGILVIE, whose personal ink stamp is in the top right margin. He has also added some pencil notes which relate to him cross referencing this example with Austro-Hungarian maps he also had in his collection ('Temesvár' is the Hungarian name for TIMISOARA.) Professor ALAN GRANT OGILVIE was an eminent geographer whose service with the Royal Field Artillery in WW1 led him to transfer to the Royal Engineers for the purpose of mapping the Dardanelles and the Macedonian Front etc. His military service in Salonika, France and the Dardanelles saw him mentioned in dispatches, and in 1919 he attended the Paris Peace Conference representing the British delegation in respect to international boundary settlements. Following WW1 he resumed his academic career, rising to head Edinburgh University's Geography Department, still finding time to become a Captain in the Home Guard during WW2. The map is in excellent condition for its age and will be shipped as per its existing fold lines.
