Description: Wie war zu Koln es doch vordem or What Was it Like in Cologne Before... This is a beautifully illustrated fairy tale in German, about the brownies (helpful fairy folk) in Cologne. Basically, the story goes that people didn't have to work hard, for while they lazed and slept, the brownies would do all their work for them. Each page visits another resident of Cologne : the carpenter, the baker, the butcher, the cooper, the tailor - and in each home, the brownies worked hard so the humans didn't have to. All went well until the tailor's wife grew curious how he achieved so much hard work. She sneaked down in the night with her candle...and saw the brownies! She chased them away with a "Shoo! Shoo! Shoo!" And from that day forward, the brownies have never returned, and now the people of Cologne must do all their hard work themselves. Ours is in Good condition, with some water staining (shown photo 1, no mildew!) Inscribed in German cursive on title page "Happy Birthday greetings from Aunt Lotte se Kirsten". Otherwise excellent - binding sound, no stamps, stickers, soiling, smoke, writing, highlighting, folded corners, loose or missing pages. Any questions, please ask.
