Description: An artist would dapple a piece of greenware with bits of wax, usually in random patterns. The process continued with glaze applied over the greenware. When the artist fired the piece, the wax burned off, and the areas under it were matte, while the rest of the piece was shiny from the glaze. A coat of gold paint, usually 22 karat, was then applied, and the artist fired it again, leaving the work with a mottled finish of random shiny and matte spots. The style got its name from the random appearance of the gold splotches. Because of how the hot wax slid down the surface of the greenware, the shapes often resembled tears that would “weep” down the sides of the vessels.
