Description: Vought V-172 Flying Pancake The Vought V-173 was an experimental test aircraft built as part of the Vought XF5U program during World War II.It featured an unorthodox “all-wing” design, consisting of a flat, disk-shaped body with large-diameter propellers on the wingtips.The aircraft was designed by Charles H. Zimmerman, who believed that a flying pancake shape would improve aerodynamics, speed, and maneuverability compared to traditional aircraft designs.The V-173 made its maiden flight on November 23, 1942, and underwent 190 test flights and 131 test hours.Although it exhibited unusual control responses and flight characteristics, the aircraft showed excellent short-field qualities and a rate-of-climb of 5,000 feet in 7 minutes.Unfortunately, the V-173 lacked the required fighter performance, reaching a top speed of only 138 mph in a dive.The program received limited funding from the Navy, and the development of the V-173 was slower than anticipated.There is no information available on a Vought V-172 Flying Pancake, as it appears to be a non-existent variant.
