Description: The Washington Dram Cup This handsome cup was inspired by an original that is part of the Mount Vernon Collection of Washington family silver. The word "dram" derives from a term frequently used in the 18th century to mean a small drink of medicine, spirituous liquor, or cordials, many of which were made at home from recipes found in published cookbooks of the time. Cordials were distilled in Mount Vernon's kitchen by several generations of the Washington family. The Griffin is an ancient mythical beast with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. The griffin and ducal coronet comprise the crest, which was part of his full coat of arms. Washington used the crest on his silver throughout his adult life.
