Description: Vintage hand painted metal tole tray with multicolored floral design on a black ground. This is a "hobby tray," hand painted by an individual at home, as opposed to mass manufactured by one of the big toleware companies in the mid-20th century. Tole painting was a popular hobby for cultured housewives from the1940s-60s, the way needlework was in the early 20th century. These trays varied greatly in the quality of the painting but I think this one is very well-done! Besides the central floral painting it has a nice red-orange border around its petite Chippendale shape. It is unsigned by the artist. It measures 7 3/4" wide and 5 1/2" tall and is in very good condition for a tray from this period...no wear to the floral, a few small chips at the bottom ground, minor scratches and scuffs, a few errant paint marks on the back. I have vignettes of these trays in all different sizes, shapes and colors on walls all over my house, and they make great art displays. I have been a huge toleware collector over the years and am finally starting to downsize my collection, so please check my listings if you are a tole lover!
