Description: This gorgeous old New York-made Ansonia tambour clock confounds me! The petite, 11-inch case is made of solid mahogany that's in really nice condition. Its appeal is partly from the "head" shape of the dial configuration, the small scrolls on the shoulders, the thick beveled glass lensl, and the wonderful oxidation that has bled into the Roman numeral, metal face. The case sits on 4 brass feet. The rear access door fits precisely and unsnaps to reveal the winding knob and S/F adjustment. The spring loaded time set knob works fine but the original key grip is missing so a small brass screw has been threaded in for something to grab onto. All good. But... even though the hairspring/balance wheel movement runs evenly and for full its 8-day duration without any problems, the hands move sporadically, sometimes keeping pretty good time, other times very little movement. This may indicate slippage in the time train or snail and I do not have the expertise to tackle that. The brass case and back access door have all original parts and the mounting fits like it should. There is a shallow crack on the top tambour, but zero gouges, very little alligatoring, and lovely reddish-brown mahogany grain. This is not a chiming model. This clock is trying to tell us time, but just happily ticks away. Thanks for looking!
