In 1980, he collaborated with Mathison to develop a story from the unrealized project Night Skies. Within two months, Mathison wrote the first draft, E.T. and Me, which underwent two rewrites. Universal Pictures purchased the script for $1 million after Columbia Pictures rejected it. Filming occurred from September to December 1981 with a budget of $10.5 million, shot in rough chronological order to enhance emotional performances. Carlo Rambaldi designed the animatronics.E.T. premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 26, 1982, and released in the U.S. on June 11, 1982. It became the highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing Star Wars, until Jurassic Park in 1993. Acclaimed by critics, E.T. is considered one of the greatest films ever. It received nine Academy Award nominations, winning four, including Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects. It won five Saturn Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. The film was re-released in 1985 and 2002, with updated effects, and again in IMAX on August 12, 2022, for its 40th anniversary. In 1994, it was added to the National Film Registry for its cultural significance.
