Description: We are both the oldest surviving members of our families. As life-long collectors, and inheritors from those who have Gone Before, we must move on some of our Stuff before that (hopefully far-off) day when it becomes our children’s responsibility. Happy to combine for cheaper postage but PLEASE WAIT for combined invoice from me or ask me for one; postage discounts can only be given on combined purchases paid for on a single invoice. USA INTEREST 1844 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION CHASE FAMILY LETTERS CHARLES TO HORACE #6 These letters were found in the base of the Chinoiserie sewing/ writing box I am selling – see #7. Whether they have anything to do the box I have no idea. “Horace Gair Chase was born in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, July 9, 1827, one of three sons of probate judge Horace and Betsy (Blanchard) Chase. His mother died when he was young, and his father remarried in June 1844. At age sixteen he was apprenticed to the mathematical and nautical instrument store of Samuel S. Thaxter & Son in Boston, where he remained for over a year until his health failed.” See https://sparedandshared2.wordpress.com/letters/1845-charles-carroll-chase-to-horace-gair-chase/ for another similar letter. Two letters from Charles Carroll Chase to his brother Horace Gair Chase. Chrles was living at Hopkinton NH and Horace at No 125 State Street Boston Mass – the premises of Samuel S. Thaxter & Son, his employer – see above. Although according to biographical notes Charles could only have been around 15 when the letters were written, they are written in a very clear and adult hand, and convey a keen interest in political affairs. The first letter dated 18 Sept 1844 has written on the cover “Young Hickory Dallas & Victory. Go Ahead”. This refers to James K Polk (Young Hickory) and George M Dallas, who had been chosen as the Democratic Party’s candidates for the 1844 Presidential Election. The second letter dated Nov 8 1844 has written on the cover “Polk and Dallas. Oregon & Texas. Motto Go Ahead”. This refers to the annexation of Texas, and the Oregon Boundary Dispute, which became popular themes during the Election. I wish I could tell you in more detail about the letters but much of them is crossed with double writing, and they have defeated me. I would assume however that they do hold political references, among family and other news. Each are approx 25 x 20 cms, 2 folded pages written on both sides, and over written (in red ink) on the inside pages. Folded to make an envelope, sealed with wax. The front of one is a bit water stained, but really they are in very good condition and perfectly legible to someone more familiar to old writing than me. Included is a 3rd smaller letter dated Sep 21 1844 which contains only family news and a recipe for marmalade. Folded and addressed “By Politeness of Mr S B Sargent” into an outer “envelope”, also addressed and sealed with a wax seal. See #5 for another Chase family letter. My Items The items I sell are vintage; they are second hand, old, sometimes very old. I try to describe and photograph my items honestly and to the best of my ability; however if pristine condition is very important to you, I feel you should be buying from a regular shop, where you can inspect the items personally. Please note that all my items are sold "as is", with no warranty implied, and that the photos form part of the description, which should be read carefully. IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM PLEASE CONTACT ME FIRST. Shipping and Payment Terms; Combining Items If you win more than one item in a listing please wait for a combined invoice from me to save you on postage and insurance costs. I always wait until the last item in an auction listing finishes before sending invoices in case buyers win more than one item. If you win an item and are planning to bid on an item in a later-finishing auction, please email me to let me know, and I will wait until that auction has finished to send you a combined invoice. International buyers please note: Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or postage charges. Please check with your country's Customs Office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding. In most cases these charges will be collected by eBay, in which case they will appear on your invoice. If not, these charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (postage) company or when you pick the item up – do not confuse them for additional postage charges. Problem with a Transaction? PLEASE contact me first. I am a reasonable human being; if there is a problem I am sure we can work something out that will satisfy us both. Involving eBay should be a last resort – something I hope will not be necessary. Contact Seller is under More Actions on your Purchase History page, or simply Reply to the email I sent when I posted your item.
