MAGGOT was one of several small, highly specialized teams that were tasked with conducting deep reconnaissance missions in enemy territory.The team consisted of 14 members, including 10 indigenous Montagnard tribesmen who served as scouts and interpreters. The team was led by a US Army captain and also included a US Air Force combat controller.MAGGOT conducted numerous missions in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, gathering intelligence on enemy movements and positions. The team was often inserted by helicopter or parachute deep into enemy territory, where they would establish observation posts and conduct surveillance on enemy forces.One of the most famous missions of Recon Team MAGGOT occurred in May 1970, when the team was inserted near the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos to gather intelligence on enemy troop movements. The team was soon discovered by North Vietnamese soldiers and engaged in a fierce firefight. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the team fought off several enemy assaults and called in airstrikes to help repel the attack. The team ultimately escaped the area after three days of intense fighting, but suffered several casualties in the process.Recon Team MAGGOT was one of the most highly decorated units of the Vietnam War, earning several Presidential Unit Citations and other awards for its bravery and heroism.
