Description: Two original 1853 antique lithographed survey maps of Waukegan Harbor, drawn under the direction of William Gamble, Agent, and printed more than 170 years ago. Each map is drawn on a scale of 100 feet to half an inch and includes details on soundings, piers, breakwaters, and features along the shore of Lake Michigan. One map is dated April 1853, with an image area measuring 22 x 38.7 cm [8¾" x 15¼"]. The other map in somewhat larger format, is dated August 29, 1853, and includes a panel with a longer view of the shoreline, on a scale of 800 feet to one inch. The overall image area measures 36 x 40.4 cm [14" x 16"]. Both maps were lithographed by James Ackerman, 377 & 379 Broadway, New York, and published in a report by the President of the United States to the First Session of the 33rd Congress, Washington, D.C., 1853. Among the named features is the original 35-foot tall lighthouse along the south edge of Little Fort River (later replaced by a lighthouse at the end of Government Pier at the foot of Madison Street). Other named features include Dead River, Washington Street, a couple of warehouses, "low sand ridges and sloughs," and the town of Waukegan. Condition: The maps are printed on a lightweight paper, bright and clean, with folds, as issued. Each has a few extra creasaes along one of the fold lines. There is no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. These are original, authentic antique maps, not reproductions or modern reprints, and they are fully guaranteed to be genuine.
