During World War II, the United States built more than 2,700 Liberty ships to meet emergency wartime needs, and the O'Brien was one of them. Liberty ships use steam power, have low cost and short construction period. They form the backbone of maritime transportation, and troops, weapons and raw materials can be transported to various battlefields. During the war, the O'Brien traveled between the east coast of Canada, the British Commonwealth, South America, Australia and the Philippines. From June to December 1994, in order to provide technical support for the Battle of Mandy, O'Brien sailed between Britain and Normandy 11 times, including sailing from South Belfast, Ireland to Normandy to serve for General Patton.
