This landmark study traces the evolution of the Waffen-SS, the military branch of the Nazi Elite Guard and the largest component of Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler’s wartime empire, and its part in the history of the Third Reich and World War II. The Viennese-born Professor Stein used the most important primary sources as well as captured German documents. The book has fold-out maps of the European Theater of War in 1939-41, 1942-43 and 1944 as well as many period photos of SS men all over Europe, many of them not published in other book on the subject. The in-depth study also has a comparative table of ranks, a chart of the SS organization of the SS, a Glossary of frequently used German terms, an extensive Bibliography and Index.
