Description: The Prelude: An Autobiographical by William Wordsworth 1799 - 1805, Doves Press, 1915. DESCRIPTION: One of only 155 copies on paper. Octavo (8vo), 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches (24 x 16.8 cm), [7], 302 pp., [7]. Text printed in black and red. Original full limp vellum binding, stamped in gilt on spine, top edge trimmed, other edges untrimmed. By the Doves Press Bindery. CONDITION: Honeyed vellum shows normal variation in color and pattern, quite clean. Limp vellum binding is 'sprung', i.e., the front and rear covers have concave shape and both covers have moved away from the text block. This is often seen with limp vellum bindings of considerable age due to shrinking and retraction of the vellum which then pulls back upon the covers. No writing or ex-libris, text block firm and all hinges intact. Interior pages in fine condition without toning or foxing. DISCUSSION: William Wordsworth's long autobiographical poem was written at the age of 28, a deeply personal poem of youthful inspiration. It is considered to be at the heart of the British Romantic period of poetry from the 1780s to the 1832 Reform Act. The poem charts the poet's mind and development, his decision to devote his career to writing poetry. It is both a meditation on self and an appreciation of nature. Wordsworth would continue to work on and revise The Prelude for the remainder of his life. The Doves Press edition is arguably the finest private press edition.
