The GIVER ~ Lois Lowry. #1 in series includes notes 1st sc 2014 HERE in MELB

Description: The Giver is a 1993 American young adult dystopian novel by Lois Lowry. It is set in a society which at first appears to be utopian but is revealed to be dystopian as the story progresses. The novel follows a 12-year-old boy named Jonas. The Giver, the 1994 Newbery Medal winner, has become one of the most influential novels of our time. The haunting story centres on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. This movie tie-in edition features cover art from the movie and exclusive Q&A with members of the cast, including Taylor Swift, Brenton Thwaites and Cameron Monaghan. It's a perfect world, where everything looks right. But ugly truths lie beneath the surface! It is the future. There is no war, no hunger, no pain. No one in The Community wants for anything. Everyone is provided for. Each Family Unit is entitled to one female and male child. Each member of The Community has their profession carefully chosen for them by the Committee of Elders, and they never make a mistake. Jonas, a sensitive twelve-year-old boy, had never thought there was anything wrong with his Community, until one day. From the moment Jonas is selected as the Receiver of Memory at The Ceremony, his life is never the same. Jonas discovers that The Community is not as perfect as it seems. Although they appear to have everything, they are missing something of great importance. It is up to Jonas, with the help of the Giver, to find what long ago had been lost. And so Jonas embarks on an adventure to save the world as he knows it. Simply and beautifully written, The Giver is sure to touch the heart of every reader. Lois Lowry deals with issues of everyday life that are so often taken for granted.Through the noble character of Jonas, she presents a glimpse of what could be the future. As the tension in the novel mounts, so does the number of questions that Lowry confronts the reader with. The Giver is a book of courage and adventure, and most importantly, one of deep thought. Once readers make contact with Lowry's treasure, they may never see things exactly quite the same. Lowry presents a forceful novel that demands to be heard and philosophically dealt with. About the Author Lois Lowry, author of over thirty novels and twice winner of the Newbury Medal (for The Giver and Number the Stars), was born on the 20th March 1937 in Hawaii. Her father was an Army dentist and the family lived all over the world. She went to Brown University but left to get married and raise a family of four children. She settled in Maine, where she returned to college and received her degree from the University of Southern Maine. She fulfilled a childhood dream when she started writing in the 1970s. In her books, Lois throws her characters and readers into many thought-provoking situations. She explains that she measures her success as an author by her ability to "help adolescents answer their own questions about life, identity and human relationships." Long divorced, and now a grandmother of four, today she lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts with her partner, Martin Small, and their Tibetan terrier, Alfie, and spends weekends in their nineteenth-century farmhouse in Maine.Very Interesting & Entertaining read!Reviews"Lowry is once again in top form - raising many questions while answering few, and unwinding a tale fit for the most adventurous readers." - Publishers Weekly. "The Giver, a powerful and provocative novel, is sure to keep older children reading and thinking." - New York Times FIVE STARS!! …. The giver (The Giver Quartet, #1), Lois Lowry … The Giver is a 1993 American young adult dystopian novel by Lois Lowry. It is set in a society which at first appears to be utopian but is revealed to be dystopian as the story progresses. The novel follows a 12-year-old boy named Jonas. The society has taken away pain and strife by converting to "Sameness", a plan that has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. Jonas is selected to inherit the position of Receiver of Memory, the person who stores all the past memories of the time before Sameness, as there may be times where one must draw upon the wisdom gained from history to aid the community's decision making. Jonas struggles with concepts of all the new emotions and things introduced to him: whether they are inherently good, evil, or in between, and whether it is even possible to have one without the other. The Community lacks any color, memory, climate, or terrain, all in an effort to preserve structure, order, and a true sense of equality beyond personal individuality. LOVE this book!!! … The style of the wording pleased me very much. So much that it threatened to engulf my perception of the story. I liked the book's plot, but what made me rate the book 5 stars was the presentation of the characters. I thought the Giver would be someone who is the main character...but maybe he still is. Jonas, as a special and precocious boy, is the classic hero in this book. I think many people have read The Giver. If you haven't, then there's no hurry. The story will remain actual at any time of the future. It's a timeless tale, well told. And in the end, we all take something small, and personal, from the book. Perfect tale … Thoroughly impressed by "The Giver," a two-decade old gem in a genre that basically always leaves me wanting more. No, this is concise & has all the basic elements of a dystopian horror tale. The sketchy subjects of individuality and color (in that pleasant "Pleasantville" way) and community are handled incredibly well (yes, "Hunger Games" is a rip off of this & Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" and William Golding's "Lord of the Flies")--the subject of infanticide just gives this classic YA the push requisite to make it epic & essential both.
