Description: Superb Antique Robert Hills Signed Colour Washed Highland Cattle Print, 1801 Robert Hills (1769 – 1844) an English, working mostly as a watercolourist and etcher. Born in Islington, his early studies were under John Alexander Gresse (Royal drawing master) later enrolling in the Royal Academy Schools in London. His work features village and rural scenes, but is famous for his portrayal of farm animals. His favourite subjects were cattle, sheep, donkeys, pigs and deer. He worked plein-air in making sketches and produced meticulous anatomical studies of these animals, he believed in the importance of drawing from life. Hills produced over a 1000 etchings. He published Etchings of Quadrupeds; which were released as folio and as books between 1798 and 1815. The British Museum holds 1240 of the artist’s collection of his own etchings. His watercolours are characterised by the precision with which the animals were observed and drawn, he would colour wash his line drawings with greys, blues and browns to create interest and atmosphere. Hills was a founding member of the Old Watercolour Society. This is a wonderful original print signed and dated in the bottom right corner, it reads: London Publish’d Jan’y 1st 1801 by R.Hills The etching or print has been taken from an original field study of highland cattle and has then been hand coloured using water colour paints. The whole composition really is quite charming. I believe the frame is original or at least is contemporary to the print. The print measures approx. 20.2cm by 12.2cm, the frame is 26.7cm by 18.3cm. The print is in good condition, the frame is also in good order, but someone has started to remove the gilt finish, there are worm holes the frame has been treated for woodworm. The frame is missing the loops to hold string for hanging on the wall, these are easily added. A superb collectable. Please see pictures for more details. Thanks for looking and Happy Bidding!
