Description: Stoneware Pottery Jug, Antique Primitive Collectible, Ohio Farmhouse Cellar, Clay Slip Paint Mache Crackled Glaze, Whiskey Cider, Handle An Ohio Farmhouse Cellar Jug This old jug measures 10 inches tall by about 7 inches in diameter. It is very heavy and likely came from an Ohio or adjacent state potter as it was found in an Ohio farmhouse cellar. Although, I see no maker mark. If my math is correct, the jug holds roughly 1.5 gallons I believe the glaze that is cracked/crackled is an old clay slip glaze but I do not know that for sure. It could be old paint. And it may be a kind of paper mache clay covering as some of the pieces seem to be rectangular. The cracks, whether a slip or a paint or paper mache, certainly do not go through to the jug itself but are simply aging on an old surface. I cannot guarantee there are no cracks in the jug underneath this unusual surfacing, but it does not appear so. I expect the jug itself to be an old salt-glaze piece of stoneware. So, aside from the outside glaze/paint, there are likely no chips or cracks on this jug. The handle is solid and strong. At one time the jug had a cork. As you can see in the photos there is not much cork left. This old jug came from my family’s Ohio farmhouse cellar and could be as old as the mid to late 1800s. It was likely originally used for whiskey or cider. Some of the photos are taken with a camera flash in order to best show the detail of this jug and the unique outside texture. Other photos are taken without a camera flash to better show more true color. Due to the fragility and value of this old piece, please ask all the questions you might have before you buy in order to avoid returns and excess time in the post. I am very happy to answer any and all questions to the best of my ability. Thanks!
