Description: A good, but worn, copy of a very rare book of Thirties graphic art: George Buday's BOOKS OF BALLADS. Published by the College of Art, Szeged University, in 1934. Printed by Izidor Kner of Goyma, Hungary. The book consists of an introduction in English, followed by 50 single-sided black and white woodcuts by Buday. The prints are somber and many have a religious theme. Buday (1907-1970) was a Hungarian printmaker and author who emigrated to Britain in 1937. He was fortunate to have gotten out of Hungary before the war. The paper covers are soiled and half the spine is either missing or torn. The interior is clean with a very loose binding. The last two signatures are detached but present. No plates are missing. No previous owners' names. Not ex-library. Despite the issues, the book is a very rare example of Thirties graphic art from Central Europe. Size is approximately 6 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches. The woodcuts vary in size. Unpaginated, though the plates are numbered. Feel free ask any questions you may have; I'd be happy to answer. Shipping is $4.95 via USPS Media Mail. International buyers are welcome, but I ONLY ship to US addresses. The stated shipping charge is ONLY valid for US addresses. You need to go through eBay International Shipping if you're interested, and you are responsible for any import dues or taxes on the book. They are reliable, but it will add cost to your purchase. Sorry, but international purchases are NOT returnable. Well wrapped, securely boxed. I value the things I sell.
