Description: This beautiful Rochester Optical Company 5 x 8 view camera was made around 1895, making it around 129 years old. The brass lens is 2 inches long and says R.O. Co. No 2. There is no front glass lens element (I don't know if there was supposed to be one) but the glass lens in back of the barrel looks to be clear of scratches. There is a lens cap. The rotating aperture dial in the front of the lens has 4 different sized holes. The sides of the camera are beautifully dovetailed. The wood is a reddish brown. It looks like mahogany or cherry (but I am not a wood expert). The removable lens board is 6 13/16 inches x 3 3/4 inches. The bellows ARE NOT light tight. The 5 x 8 frosted glass on the back is in very good condition. When the camera is fully extended on the rear tailboard, it is 11 1/4 inches from the camera frames front to the frames's back and 12 inches from the front of the frame to the back of the camera's tailboard. The lens stick out another 2 inches. The camera measures 9 1/2 inches wide and 7 1/4 inches tall. The wood is in excellent condition except for the underside of the tailboard/camera where it attaches to a tripod. The silver knob on the front moves the lens board up and down about 1/2 inch This is a beautiful very old camera that is in excellent cosmetic condition and would be a wonderful addition to any camera collection.
