Susan Seddon Boulet (Brazilian, b. 1941) Psyche, 1990 Oil pastel, ink and pencil Published by Pomegranate Publications, Box 808022, Petaluma, California 94975 1991 Susan Seddon Boulet PSYCHE Psyche was a mortal maiden, a king's daughter of surpassing beauty who was said to be even fairer than Aphrodite. This aroused the anger of the jealous goddess, who sent her son Eros to trick Psyche into falling in love with the "vilest creature on earth." Instead, Eros fell in love with Psyche and she with him. Their union hinged on one condition: she was never to look at him when there was light. But her curiosity consumed her, and in looking at him by lamplight she lost him. In search of Eros, Psyche had to accomplish the seemingly impossible tasks set down by Aphrodite, which she succeeded in doing. Afterward, Eros rescued her and took her to Mt. Olympus, where they married and she became immortal. A vulnerable goddess, Psyche exemplifies the powers of devotion and the ability to develop inner strength when one's courage is tested. She risked all for love and won.
