General Description: A medium-sized, spiny, deciduous tree – also commonly grown as a hedgerow shrub. Hardiness Zone: 4 to 9 Maintenance: High – regular pruning will keep it in bounds. Mature Height: 40 to 65 feet Mature Width: 20 to 60 feet Plant Details: Growth Habit: Rounded form, suckers readily – offering a fuller hedgerow – rapid growth rate. Leaf Structure: Alternately arranged, simple, ovate, dark green, shiny topside with paler green undersides, thick with milky sap. Autumn color is bright yellow. Stem Structure: Bright green when young, then turns light brown tinged with orange. Bark Structure: Dark and deeply furrowed and scaly. The actual wood is bright orange-yellow with paler yellow sapwood. Wood is heavy, hard, strong yet flexible – capable of receiving a fine polish and very durable in contact with the ground, making it a great fencepost.
