Description: Original 1895 antique color lithographed map of the central part of Washington, D.C., printed more than 120 years ago. The map has excellent detail on the city's street layout and transporation system, including railroads, cable lines, and streetcar routes, shown with dashed lines. This map was printed during the time the city was switching from horse-drawn streetcars to those powered by electricity or underground cable. Cable lines, like the one along Pennsylvania Avenue on this map, operated for only a few years. Among the other named places and features on the map are the Potomac River ferry docks, Gonzaga College, Normandy Hotel, Harris Bijou Theatre, Garfield Park, Albaugh's Grand Opera House, Children's Hospital, Dupont Circle, James Creek Canal, Farragut Square, Fish Commission Building, Maryland Avenue, and the House where Lincoln died. The image area measures 32 x 25.4 cm [12½" x 9¼"] on a larger sheet, with a street index in the margins at left and right. Condition: The map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. It is titled "Rand McNally & Co.'s Map of the Main Portion of Washington, D.C." It is copyrighted © 1895 in the legend. There's a map of Virginia on the reverse side, with a breakdown of its population, based on the 1890 census, including male, female, native, foreign, white, African, Chinese, Japanese, and Indian.
