Description: When Roger Zarembinski returned from service in Vietnam, he didn’t know what his next step was.He was sitting on his front step one afternoon when a neighborhood child, a second-grade little girl, joined him. Sheasked him to draw a picture of her house. After seeing it, she said: “God made you to draw. I wonder what God willmake me to do.”Zarembinski decided to enroll at Minneapolis College of Art and Design, then went on to pursue art education at theUniversity of Minnesota. While taking a job as a bus driver for various school districts, Zarembinski married and had children, raising them in LinoLakes. He also continued to pursue his art, transforming a chicken coop behind his farmhouse into a studio. From there, he has done art for almost every imaginable purpose. One of his most notable works is a pastel chalk drawing of Kateri, the first American Indian to be canonized intosainthood. In 2007, the piece made its way to Fort Berthold, the reservation where Zarembinski has traveled numeroustimes as a volunteer driver for church missions. To Zarembinski, Kateri communicates an energy that is beyond simpleappearance. Kateri’s face had been scarred by smallpox but despite her scarring, she still ‘had that inner energy andbeauty’, Zarembinski notes.Zarembinski also focuses on drawing images of families to reinforce the beauty of family. His moving drawing of the HolyFamily is well recognized.Whether his subject is a family, a person, or a group of statuesque orchids, Roger Zarembinski’s mission is always thesame: to pursue the idea of noble beauty.--Portions Excerpted from Press Publications, February 13, 2007, Heidi Fehring
