The ancient oceans were full of dangerous predators and over millions of years, soft bodied squid-like cephalopods evolved a shell to protect themselves. The fossil pictured is the spiral shell of the extinct mollusk, Ammonite. They grew up to 3 meters (9 feet) in diameter. As it grew a new chamber was added, leaving growth lines visible on the fossil, like rings on a tree.
