Description: Nice 1833 Capped Bust Dime - F details; minor scratches on reverse. When this venerable old dime was born Andrew Jackson was president, and ten cents would buy you a small meal, or a lot of beer. Yet this old lady has survived over 190 years largely intact. I am not a professional coin grader, but applying the standard grading criteria for this coin, the obverse appears to me to qualify as “Fine.” The date is plain, as are the legends (“UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “10c”). “LIBERTY” is complete and strong, the ear is visible, and the rim is entirely visible on the obverse, and mostly visible on the reverse. These factors exceed what is needed to qualify as “Fine.” The only place it is a little weaker is that the shoulder clasp is just barely visible. In addition, time has been harder to the back of this coin than to its front. The reverse has more wear than the obverse, including a few minuscule scratches and a tiny divot below the motto. I have tried to make sure these are visible in the photos, but with the coin in hand they are only barely noticeable. So, I think this old survivor is properly classified as “Fine details.” Check out the photos to decide for yourself. If you are not sure about grading, compare this coin with the examples on the PCGS site at this address https://www.pcgs.com/photograde#/Capped10Lg/Grades The Red Book value at Fine is $70. Reviewing recent sales on eBay, I have found price realizations for comparable coins with minor flaws ranging from $35 to 45, but each with its own idiosyncrasies. Given that range, I will start the bidding on this one at just $27.95, and leave the pricing up to the wisdom of the market. Our lot no 467
