The dust jacket, illustrated by Robert Skemp, was added to unsold copies to boost sales and promote the 1949 Paramount film featuring Alan Ladd. It is considered scarce and condition-sensitive.The jacket was designed to fit the Bantam third printing book issued in March 1946, which has a smaller spine than the first and second printings.
