Description: This is a very fine matching pair of rosewood side chairs by John Henry Belter. Mid 19th century, with pretty new fabric and in very fine condition. When John Henry came to New York (a German immigrant) in 1833, he could never imagined what was in store for him. While working in a furniture factory he developed a process for laminating rosewood in many layers to achieve thin panels that, once shaped in molds through steam heating, were finely carved. This style, which became very popular in NYC and elsewhere, was copied by several other furniture manufacturers but Belter remained the 'King of Victorian Furniture". This particular pattern was named Rosalie with Grapes. Approximately 19 wide and 37 high. (an aside: rosewood gets its named from the fragrance emitted when the trees were cut in the South American forest). Email any day (see email address above---I normally check email several times each day) for any questions you may have. A word about condition.
