Here we have a very impressive piece: a large, one-of-a-kind, finely done vintage ironwood carving! It is BIG and HEAVY - see some pictures with measuring tape and other objects for scale. It is 3 feet long, 8 inches tall, 4 inches thick, and weighs a whopping 25 lbs! This is due to the density of the ironwood it is carved out of (It's called "iron" wood for a reason). A master carver produced this, and it is carved around natural holes and flaws in the ironwood slab, yet seems to have almost been planned and formed that way instead of improvised around. You can see the holes in the slab they worked around when looking at the back of it. It depicts 2 large rhinoceros, walking along together through the savanna. One is eating some grass, the other is approaching a gnarled tree. Someone with REAL skill did this. It is also apparently somewhat old. It came from an estate sale, and the person selling it claimed her husband was a big game hunter who went on safari, and brought this back with him. It then sat as a mantle piece for several decades. This is for someone who wants a SERIOUS fine wood carving. Maybe for a hotel lobby, or the hunting lodge of a sportsman who is fond of African big game, or for their home.
