Description: This Lionel 70-Ton Drop-End Gondola is a stunning replica of the 1937 Bethlehem Steel model, with a sleek black color and the New York Central corporate road-name. The item is already pre-built and ready to go. Made from metal and plastic materials, this vintage piece was manufactured in 1949 and is considered a true gem for any American Railroad franchise enthusiast. The scale of the model is 1:48, with a 3-rail rail system and O-27 gauge. The control system is analog, and it features magnetic plate couplers. This piece is perfect for transportation-themed collections and is appropriate for ages 17 and up. The item weighs 1 lb and was made in the United States between 1937 and 1957. In 1951, Lionel changed production to the bar end truck that used a magnetic coupler plate that was attached to the axles of the wheel sets. This coupler went through a number of changes until 1958 when it was replaced by the AAR truck that used a disc instead of a plate to open the coupler. The 52-6 riveted 70-ton drop-end gondola car as designed and produced by Bethlehem Steel. First produced in March 1937 for Baltimore & Ohio Railroad as class O-59, B&O alone purchased 4,000 of these drop-end gondolas which served every corner of North America in many services. Five additional railroads purchased these Bethlehem-design gondolas in intervening years until production ceased in 1957, with some going to second-hand owners as well. Most of these gondolas were phased from revenue service by the mid-1980s, with many serving additional years in various MOW roles.
