Description: Very nicely painted vintage 1830-1850 era large portrait of distinguished man. Oil on canvas with no visible signature. Framed in period mahogany frame with overall framed measurements of 37 x 30 3/4 inches. Painting was wax relined some time ago. Condition is overall very good, with even craquelure throughout, more pronounced in background. It's possible bitumen type paint was used at the time by the artist. Face and eyes are very well done. $6750 or best offer. $175 to ship due to large size. Will be shipped by FedEx or UPS. There is an old 19th century inscription on the back stretcher "Est..ton Post Office". Possibly gentleman was a local postmaster? Could probably be attributed to one of the more famous American Portrait painters. Free local pickup.
