Description: JASON & THE ARGONAUTS Mettlach Stoneware 18.25” J. Stahl Phanolith Charger A Mettlach stoneware 18.25” circular plaque, aka charger, circa 1900, molded after J. Stahl, in low white relief on a green ground, with a scene of Jason and the Argonauts disembarking from a ship. Impressed signature Stahl (a couple of inches directly below the end of the snake’s tail – very hard to photograph). Impressed Mettlach mark and 2442 (design number) on reverse with impressed 99 and impressed 16, with Mettlach’s stamped Made in Germany mark. Remains of previous sticker and handling marks on back. A similar plaque molded with the same subject and signed Stahl is illustrated in Gary Kirsner, The Mettlach Book, cat.nr. 2442, p. 226 Jean-Baptiste Stahl (1869-1932) was the inventor and designer of the Phanolith. His detailed, translucent and finely worked porcelain reliefs gained him a gold medal at the 1900 World's Fair Paris. Partly influenced by art nouveau, Jean-Baptist Stahl took topics from Greek mythology and rural life. Usually, the white translucent figures are finely set on a blue or green background that partly shines through. Striking is his absolute eye for the detailed modelling of his figures in a very delicate and lively way. I pack very well and ship quickly. Please see my feedback and bid or buy with confidence.
