Description: ANTIQUE JAPANESE SATSUMA 1000 FLOWERS ‘PINCHED LOBE’ TEA BOWL. This multi-flower style is called nuri-tsuboshi ("packed flowers") or alternatively Mille fleur or One Thousand Flowers. The Shimazu Clan Crest (cross in circle) dates it to the Meiji period (1868-1912). Classic Satsuma ware with hand painted polychrome enamels over which is applied an abundance of gold gilded detailing which is also hand painted of course. Both the interior and the sides are covered with chrysanthemums and peonies, among other flowers and little if any negative (undecorated) space. The lobed upper rim is also gilded and has this ‘pinched in’ detail which also continues the flower theme. The underside has the circle and cross mark of the Shimazu Clan and character mark below which is very hard to read but might be the marksto say it is Satsuma. It’s a thing of beauty and age and would have to be a welcome addition to any Satsuma collection. CONDITION In very good antique condition with few signs of age or use. The only things to be mentioned are a few tiny flakes or rubbed areas to the gilded rim, the largest of which I have shown in close up photo the other few areas are much smaller. Also shown in close up is a small round indentation on the inside rim that I’m sure is a tiny ’blow out’ when it was being fired – you can see the gilder has brushed over the top of it and although it has not been completely filled with gold the gilding goes down the sides of the very small indent to some degree. Fine crazing to under the foot where it is signed as is standard with old Satsuma pottery. All of this is of little to no consequence and only mentioning for accuracy of description- overall the condition is extremely good. DIMENSIONS It measures approximately: 5cm (2") high 9.8cm (3 7/8") across Weight is: 139 grams >>>>>>1474<<<<<< We guarantee our descriptions are accurate and our prices competitive.
