Description: Albuquerque’s response to Modernism – the architectural avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century, of which the Art Deco movement of the 1920s and 1930s is an important component – was complex and varied. The growing city looked to the new as well as the mythic past characterized by the Santa Fe style. The result was rarely restricted to one cultural tradition. Influences include forms and motifs from a variety of intermixed cultural and social collisions. The result can be sophisticated, as with the Albuquerque Indian Hospital, or homespun, like the Shaffer Hotel in Mountainair. This book celebrates the cultural mixing of various Native American, Hispanic, and 19th- and 20th-century Anglo American forms and motifs unique to Albuquerque during the first half of the 20th century. The author, Paul R. Secord, is a 1972 graduate of the University of New Mexico. After a career in Southern California as an environmental planning consultant specializing in historic and cultural resources, he now calls Albuquerque home. Secord has prepared numerous cultural resource evaluations, as well as documentation for several buildings and districts listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Exploration, and interpretation of the American Southwest is his full-time occupation and avocation. The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. Arcadia is proud to pay a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all. This new softcover book, copyright 2012, is in excellent condition.
