The hotel was built in 1859-60, designed by architect Griffith Thomas, and was known for its luxurious accommodations and prime location. The hotel was a popular destination for the elite of New York City and attracted many famous guests over the years, including Ulysses S. Grant, Mark Twain, and Oscar Wilde.The Fifth Avenue Hotel was renowned for its opulence and amenities, such as a grand dining room, a ladies' drawing room, and a gentlemen's reading room. The hotel was also one of the first to have elevators, which were operated by uniformed attendants. The hotel was considered one of the most luxurious and prestigious hotels in New York City during its heyday in the late 19th century.The hotel closed in 1908 and was demolished in 1909 to make way for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower. Today, the site of the former Fifth Avenue Hotel is occupied by the south wing of the MetLife Building, which was completed in 1963.
