ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Mega-Ultra-Rare Antique c.1906-1912 “Thistle Facsimile” Photochrom Chromolithograph (Aäc Process) of a Beautiful Landscape Scene Depicting a Young Native American Taos Pueblo Indian Crouching behind Some Aspen Trees Observing a Group of Turkeys in the Grove titled, “The Enchanted Wood” (AKA simply “Enchanted Wood”), after the original 1906 watercolor painting by the world-famous listed painter, ‘Eanger Irving Couse, N.A.’ (American, 1866-1936), who was a founding member and first president of the Taos Society of Artists, and whose signature, ‘E - I - Couse’, appears printed lower-left in the image corner. We currently have a couple other XRare E.I. Couse Chromolithos available, so please have a look! Couse’s painted the scene in the early spring of 1906 while working in his New York studio in preparation for the forthcoming exhibit of the “39th Annual Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society” that May at the American Fine Arts Galleries in New York City and was listed for sale for $600 which was a lot of money back then and equals $19,786- in today’s dollar for 2023. From 1902-1926, Couse made frequent trips to Taos to visit friends and to paint the Taos Pueblo Indians. He spent every summer there and it soon became his permanent home in 1927. Couse often used his two favorite models for most of his figurative scenes, Ben Couse Lujan (AKA Luhan, Taos Pueblo, 1889-1975) and Geronimo Gomez (Star Road, Taos Pueblo, 1885-1965) who were Taos Pueblo residents, and through many of Couse’s works you can see the two boys slowly age over the many years he painted them—though I’m not sure if either boy was the model Couse used for this particular scene (from Couse’s photographs), even though both boys had been modelling for Couse since 1902. Couse’s granddaughter, Virginia Couse-Leavitt stated that Lujan was like a member of the family, from the time he was 12 years old posing for her grandfather until he passed away in 1936—Ben was so much a part of their family that he even called himself ‘Ben Couse Lujan’ which is how many others knew him as well. Lujan worked as a gardener with Couse’s wife, also named Virginia, in her terraced garden when he wasn’t posing and he continued to care for the garden for many years after her death in late 1929. Her historic garden still exists today. Another one of Couse’s favorite models was, Jerry Mirabal (Tu-e-Na Elkfoot, Taos Pueblo, 1870-1980) who was made famous by E.I. Couse and other fellow famous painter & founder member of the Taos Society of Artists, Joseph Henry Sharp (1859-1953) and began posing for them in 1907/1908 and was one of the painters’ favorite subjects because of his “physical beauty and ideal features”. Mirabal lived a very long life and passed away in 1980 at the age of 110. Publisher & Chromolitho Info: The publisher’s info tag is still thankfully with the piece and is adhered (glued) to the backing stock for the Print in the upper-left corner area with the DPC Trademark “Thistle” logo (thistle within an oval swoop) & Registration info at the top of it, and it reads: ‘E. IRVING COUSE, N.A., “THE ENCHANTED WOOD”, Copyright Detroit Publishing Co.’, and the DPC Trademark logo of a painter’s palette with their copyright, date & name, ‘Copyright. 1906. By Detroit Publishing Co.’, appears printed very small lower-right in the image corner area on the Print itself (on tree base), and the original DPC inventory number ‘68000’, appears printed lower-left just under the artist’s printed signature (Alternate DPC inventory number 67008). The Print itself is drymounted onto a heavy-weight cream-colored wove backing-stock substrate which has a decorative blind-embossed thin line border around the Print, and the DPC’s embossed “Thistle” logo appears lower-middle in the outer margin area of the backing stock which is on ‘Alexandra Japan, Made in U.S.A’ paper which the DPC used on many of their mounted prints. We sold many of these antique early 1900’s “Thistle” prints back-in-the-day for $12- which equals $360- in today’s dollar for 2023—certainly not cheap!!! These antique chromolithographs are extremely rare to find on the open market, especially in good, let alone excellent/mint conditions. There are printing registration pinholes noticeable in the outer backing stock corners and some internal inventory info hand-written in pencil on verso upper-left which does not specifically pertain to the Chromolitho itself, along with the alternate DPC inventory number of ‘67008’ also written. More can be read on the “Thistle Facsimile” (Waterol) process below from the Detroit Publishing Co., and their company history. Size & Condition: The Photochrom size itself is 14-1/8” x 21-1/8”, Mounted size with wide margins is 22-1/2” x 30-1/2”. The Photochrom is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with absolutely no color fade at all on this gorgeous piece—beautiful rich color & tones. Simply beautiful! This will look stunning all framed-up and would make the perfect addition to any E.I. Couse or Native American Indian/Western art collection! This Photochrom has been tucked away in one of our archive drawers amongst other antique lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family way back-in-the-day and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time—It’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition—it’s basically perfect... No foxing & no tears!—No real or significant damage at all on this beautiful chromolitho to really speak of aside from maybe few ultra-tiny outer edge chips which are totally negligible since they can easily be matted & framed out and only one ultra-small crescent-crease which isn’t even that noticeable unless you really hunt for it or see the slight crease on the back of the backing stock. Negligible/no real toning of the Chromolithograph noticeable. As per the backing stock condition: No tears & no foxing evident! There is very minimal & slight small crescent-creases scattered here & there on the backing stock, along a few outer margin edges and small bends in the outer margin corners—all of which also not worth mentioning as they are negligible as well since the backing stock can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. There is a slight curved-bend to the backing stock from when the DPC drymounted the chromolitho down, but is totally negligible as the Chromolitho will easily flatted once the outer margins of the backing stock are trimmed off or matted & framed out. This gorgeous antique Photochrom Chromolithograph has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. Note: This Chromolitho will be shipped flat & hardpacked due to it being mounted & oversized with No International Shipping for this piece. "THISTLE FACSIMILES" are copies in full color. Two methods are used, the one chosen being that which gives the best translation of the original. No known single medium gives the best translation of all classes of subjects. The proper function of the reproducer, therefore, is to select the medium best adapted for copying the original. The Aäc process (exclusively controlled by us [Photochrom process]) preserves the drawing of the original with photographic exactness, and gives a verity and range of color tone not secured by any other method. It is absolutely permanent. The “Waterol” print (produced by a photographic base with oil and water color carefully rubbed in by hand) attains a delicacy and softness of tone specially desirable for some subjects.” (From: archive’s online catalogue, Thistle Publications: Office Catalogue of Works of Art Reproduced From Eleven Leading Galleries of the United States and Many Private Collections, Detroit Publishing Company, Detroit, MI, 1912). History of the Detroit Photographic/Publishing Company: The Detroit Photographic/Publishing Company (DPC) was one of the world’s largest publishers and best producers of photographic images. In the late 1800’s, the Detroit Photographic Co., as it was known then, acquired the exclusive rights to the Swiss created ‘Photochrom’ process. A Photochrom (or Aäc process) is a photomechanical process using multiple lithographic stones to convert an original black & white photograph into a color print. A separate stone was used for each color and a minimum of 4 stones were required for each color print, although as many as 14 stones could have been used if needed. This entire process allowed the DPC to mass produce and sell color prints, postcards and albums, to the American public. The most famous American landscape photographer to work for the DPC and who was also a partner in the firm was William Henry Jackson (American, 1843-1942). Jackson joined the firm in 1897 and his already prolific work brought over 10,000 negatives to the company’s huge inventory and he helped them sell millions of prints for them annually. By 1903, Jackson became plant manager which afforded him very little time for travel and taking photographs. The company was first known as the Photochrom Company of Detroit in 1895 and they officially maintained the name until 1898 when it became known as the Detroit Photographic Company. The name later changed to the Detroit Publishing Company in 1905. Numerous well-known photographers worked for them over their 30 year time period between the years 1895-1924. Their photographers traveled all over the globe and helped Americans to see the world around them. They would also purchase negative plates from different photographers to add to their inventory. The DPC created some of the most beautiful images ever caught on film, and their scenic photos inspired travel amid the rapidly growing tourism market of the early 1900’s. The images would often incorporate people as part of the scenery set against awe-inspiring landscapes, cityscapes and various backdrops. To say the least they were majestic and mysterious to not only the common traveler but world travelers alike and often resembled paintings. The company’s images were so popular, that they created a multitude of products and souvenirs to aggressively sell them. The DPC also expanded their collection to include reproductions of famous works of art which served not only as home décor, but was also in demand as educational tools for schools and universities. During the height of its success, the DPC maintained markets in Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, London, and Zurich. They continued to expand their lines by selling images in popular boutiques, tourist spots, and also through mail-order. During World War I, sales of photographs and postcards began to decline. With the advent of newer, inexpensive methods of printing that were being used by competing firms, it eventually took its toll on the DPC and it forced the company into receivership by 1924. After struggling for the next eight years, the DPC finally liquidated all of its assets in 1932. Jackson later sold all of the DPC company negatives and prints to The Edison Institute (known today as Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village, in Dearborn, Michigan) in 1939. The Institute held the negatives until 1949, when they were then donated and divided between the Colorado Historical Society (images ‘west of the Mississippi’, about 13,000 images), and the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division (All other views, about 20,000 vintage photographs, 25,000 glass negatives, and about 300 Photochrom Prints). The Greenfield Village museum still maintains 18,000 vintage photographic prints, 9,500 postcards, and 2,500 Photochrom prints (Rewritten & compiled chronologically by Mark Strong of Meibohm Fine Arts, Inc., East Aurora, NY, meibohmfinearts) PAYING FOR YOUR ITEM: DOMESTIC PAYMENTS: are made via PayPal (Preferred) and WE REQUIRE FULL PAYMENT WITHIN 4 DAYS OF AUCTION CLOSE, otherwise an 'Unpaid Item Dispute' will be opened & filed automatically by eBay.
