Description: Early Chess Set, probably Bone, complete 32 Red & White pieces in Original Box If you are a collector you probably know more than I do from just comparing this to similar sets sold here on ebay. Here is what I know... This set is similar to sets I've seen that are attributed to Horn McCrillis. The texture, feel and detail of the pieces leads me to believe these are bone. The pieces apparently come apart and screw into the bases. Some figures, like the kings, are made of several pieces. The red is some kind of stain. They vary in height from 1 3/8 to 2 1/2" tall. I see some worn areas or maybe those are imperfections in the carving. I did not try to clean. The wooden box has 2 compartments, one for each color. Lightweight wood with dovetailed corners. The metal latch might be missing a tab to press to open it. You can open with a fingernail though. Hinges work, have a little rust, have a symbol/design embossed. Box lid seems to have been embellished with carving by the owner. I saw another set with exact box sold on ebay that had a plain lid. It measures approx 6 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/4" Please check out the photos and ask any questions...
