Eagle/Shield reverse based on the 1986 Silver Eagle by John Mercanti. Over-struck on US Mint Silver Eagle Dollars. Semi-proof-like obverse and proof-like reverse. The US Mint has produced proof versions of their popular Silver Eagles in every year from 1986 through 2008, and again starting in 2010. But no 2009-dated proof Silver Eagles were released by the US Mint. And none have ever had a “DC” mint mark. No US Mint silver Eagles ever had the Weinman Eagle reverse. The first year that the US Mint produced Silver Eagle Dollars was 1986. Some evidence of underlying host coin design may be faintly visible. Defacing of US coins is legal so long as the defacement isn't for fraudulent purposes. Since they are over-struck on existing coins, there may be faint evidence of the original coin design showing since the overstrike is usually not perfectly aligned with the original strike. A "DC" mint mark to the lower left of the Eagle provides a marker for future identification as to the source. Do not attempt to use these as legal tender.
