Description: Noted author/publisher Tom Dixon compiled this 64-page softcover on General Motors Electro-Motive Division’s GP7 and GP9 diesels, the mainstay of the C&O’s first generation diesel power. As one of the premier coal haulers, the C&O had been dedicated to big steam power. But the drop in post WWII traffic, constant labor strikes in the coal mines, and generally unproductive operations led the cash/success-starved C&O to consider reducing costs instead of expanding. Michigan-sibling Pere Marquette, with an auto industry-leaning business, had already experimented successfully with diesel switchers which streamlined operations and costs. In the late 1940s, the C&O finally started testing diesels with the acquisition of S2 and NW2 switchers. That led the C&O to embrace diesels as the future. Between March and June 1950, the C&O received their first 20 GP7 units. 179 more came through April 1953 as this diesel replaced big steam on mainline coal trains. When EMD ceased making the GP7 in favor of higher-powered GP9, the C&O eventually took 363 of this model, starting with the first deliveries in December 1954.
