Description: Author James Morgan, for the 150th anniv. celebrations of the American Civil War, 1861-1865, worked with publisher Savas-Beatie, to revise and substantially expand his original book published more than a decade ago about the Union defeat at Ball's Bluff on the Rebel side of the Potomac River. The result is: "A Little Short of Boats: The Battles of Ball's Bluff & Edwards Ferry, October 21-22, 1861". The resulting battle was a tragedy. Union Colonel Edward Baker, a favorite of the Lincoln administration, was killed and Confederate Gen. Nathan "Shanks" Evans became a hero. Retreating Union soldiers panicked and tried fleeing over Ball's Bluff down to the water's-edge, where they were literally way short of boats; many drowned. Soldiers leapt to their death off the bluff, men were picked off by Rebel sharpshooters from the bluffs, and bodies, days later, were found floating all the way down the Potomac River to D.C. Some escaped back to the Maryland shore; many did not. It was a national disgrace for the Union's President and cabinet but hailed as a mighty victory by politicians in Richmond, VA. Coming on the devastating loss at First Manassas / Bull Run, in July of 1861, things weren't looking rosy for Lincoln's war, least not in the Eastern theater of the war. Much of this battlefield along the Potomac River is now preserved and protected and is open to the public. Read this book and then go take a tour; it's a gorgeous part of northern Virginia. Consider becoming a member of the American Battlefield Trust, as I am. Your donations go to saving acres of battlefields throughout the country- creating new "green" space. This book is brand-new and unread. I bought it not realizing I already had this revised book. I'm selling it for half of what it cost me.
