While this book is so old it is in the public domain, and many reproductions exist, this First Edition with the fold out maps is a treasure that any spelunker, or someone that would like to be. Rev. Horace Carter Hovey (1833 – 1914) was both a Presbyterian minister and an American geologist, who beyond this first book, also wrote a Handbook of Mammoth Cave and many cave articles for the 9th and 11th Edition of Encyclopedia Britannica and Scientific America (all in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s). The family travelled to a range of landscapes across the United States leading his son, Dr. Edmund Otis Hovey (1862 – 1924) to also become a geologist specializing in volcanoes, earthquakes, and meteorites although he made his greatest impact as curator of geology at the American Museum of Natural History. Condition: Dark olive-green hardbound cloth boards with the title, author, and publisher blind stamped in gold gilt to the spine with only folding wear to the back strip. The front cover has a gold gilt debossed emblem of a cave entrance. Both the front and rear boards have debossed boxes around the edges and numerous cosmetic blemishes to the boards and the edges. Slight rubbing along the front gutter. All corners have slight bumping, wear at the tips. Spine is straight with no cracking at the endpapers, hinges are strong. Text block is solid with all pages firmly attached. Age tanning throughout. Previous owner inscription on opposite side of first white front endpaper. There is a small tear in the lower corner and creases to the outside edges of the Mammoth Cave fold out map. Interior text pages are clean with no tears, cracks, or other previous owner marks. Illustrated with maps, diagrams, and black & white illustrations. 228 pages including index plus 8 pages of publisher advertising. Dimensions: H – 9-1/2” W – 6-1/4”
