Description: Catch-22by Joseph Heller First printing, original first issue dust jacket Publisher and Year: New York: Random House, 1961-Edition: First edition, first printing (stated). Original first issue dust jacket with no review blurbs on the front panel and with a price of $5.95 on the front flap.-Condition and Description: Publisher's original blue cloth, lettered in white, octavo (~8.5" x 5.75"), 443 pp. Hinges and binding tight. The boards are lightly faded around the edges. One small word in ink on the front paste down and one very small stamp on the rear flyleaf; else free and clear of prior owner markings. The pages are largely clean but for an occasional minor imperfection, with one such example shown in the final picture. The original jacket has a little loss at the spine crown and two notable chips at the top of the back panel. The rear flap is lightly creased along the length where it folds around the back board and fits slightly loosely at that location, perhaps indicating that the jacket was once misfolded onto the book. There is an approximately 1" separation at the joint of the rear flap. All discussed faults are shown in the pictures. The jacket has been placed in a removable brodart cover for preservation. A very good copy of Heller's satiric anti-war novel.-βThere was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle. "That's some catch, that Catch-22," he observed. "It's the best there is," Doc Daneeka agreed.β-Inventory ID: 149 - 066 - 804
