Description: For sale is a sweet pair of circa 1860 - 1870's oil on board landscape paintings from a Hudson Valley New York estate. The paintings both in their original frames. Our initial thought was that these could be small studies from a Hudson River school artist. We suggested possibly Jasper Francis Cropsey due to their similarities of style and subject matter. Especially his atmospheric Greenwood Lake scenes. And he painted in these smaller sizes quite often. But with the locations being the Ohio river and southern Indiana, perhaps it could be an Indiana impressionist artist. We are uncertain. There was illegible pencil inscriptions on the back of each of these and after a couple glasses of whiskey, and hours of staring at them, we can read the inscriptions.... which turned out to be the titles to these paintings. Top painting: Scene On The Ohio River. Bottom Painting: Scene in Southern Indiana We have included some close-up pictures of the inscription, but it is somewhat hard to discern from a photo. The painting on the bottom appears to have two initialed signatures. One which shows the initials B T. in a light greenish paint And one that is possibly A.A (Or A H). Or perhaps it's just part of the landscape shrubs and foliage, but to us it looks intentional. Please see the close-up picture for consideration. The painting on the bottom with the signature, having some scattered surface loss as detailed in our pictures. The frame on that one also having significant gesso chips and gilt losses. The surface most likely being painted over in the early 20th century. The second frame in much better condition while also having been repainted, probably sometime early turn of the century as well. As mentioned the bottom painting having some chip loss and both Paintings would do well with a good cleaning. And while the frames are original to these paintings, they could be restored. But these paintings would look magnificent in period fluted deep cove gold gilt Hudson River School frames. Measurements: (Both) Framed - 10 1/2" x 15 1/4" Painting (wood panel) - 3 3/4" x 8 1/2" We can't figure out the artist here, but we know these are quality works. Hopefully the person buying these can nail down who they are by and hang some wonderful gems on their wall in a good collection. NOTE: THESE WIRKS HAVE GREAT COLOR. SOMETIMES THE COLOR DEGRADES WHEN LISTING ON HERE. WE CAN SEND YOU PIC IF YOU MESSAGE US. STRANGELY THE PICTURES COME THROUGH BETTER VIA MESSAGING ON HERE.
