Theodore Robert Hofer was the seventh superintendent of the Carson City Mint. His term ran from August, 1892 through June, 1894. Hofer had a long history at the mint. He was one of the original crew of coiners to work under the first superintendent, Abe Curry. This crew was responsible for the 1870-CC Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. Hofer later worked as chief clerk and as temporary superintendent when needed. In 1893, he was in charge when the orders came from Washington, D.C. to cease operations at the mint. Hofer supervised the closedown. He is the only person known to have been at the mint when the first and last coins came off the press. T. Robert Hofer, "Bob", to his friends, came from a very prominent family in Carson City. When he wasn't working at the mint he held a position at the Carson Savings Bank (which later became the Bullion and Exchange Bank). Hofer was known for his impeccable work performance and fine character. ** This may be a stock photo **
