Painted in 1885 this ancient city sits in ruins under the only active volcano on European mainland, Mt. Vesuvius. I absolutely love this painting and the vastness of the landscape not only showing exceptional detail to the ruble in the foreground but also the ruins in the far distant just small enough to make out. The depth of the painting pulls you in and really lends merit to Schreyer. The volcano that towers over this impressive Southern Italian landscape taunts the once lively city below by billowing out a very thin amount of smoke from its top. This painting is titled and dated "Pompeii 1885" low right as well as signed "Franz Schreyer". Executed in oil on artist board the unframed painting measures 13.5 x 20 inches and is in need of a deep cleaning to remove the brown varnish and surface grime as well as attention to the scratch in the top right, fortunately only in the sky.
