Australia 2010 ANA Boston 2-Coin Kookaburra Koala Set $1 Oz Pure Silver Dollars

Description: In Stock and Available for Immediate Shipment! Long SOLD OUT at the Perth Mint! A sold-out Kookaburra, a cute Koala, & a tiny mintage of only 1,500 make for a truly hard-to-find set! The American Numismatic Association (ANA) is holding its annual convention in Boston, Massachusetts in 2010. To celebrate the ANA's "World's Fair of Money" (the world's largest coin show and numismatic event), the Perth Mint and Talisman Coins are proud to offer this unique and truly scarce precious metals set, with a total mintage of only 1,500! This is even lower than the 2,000 of last year's ANA Special Edition Set - and that set sold out in no time at all! Each set contains one each of the 2010 Kookaburra and 2010 Koala 1 Ounce Pure Silver Coins - and the 2010 Kookaburra is already completely and utterly sold out at the Mint!(The 2010 Koala isn't far behind, either!) The sets are individually serial numbered and feature the high quality packaging one expects from Australia's precious metal experts. Each oversize, full-color presentation pack encapsulates the two coins and depicts a Kookaburra and a Koala, two of Australia's most recognizable animals, in their natural habitat. The Collectible Kooka & Koala! The kookaburra (or kooka) and koala are two of the iconic symbols of Australia, made all the more desirable by the Perth Mint's execution of these handsome animals in pure silver, artistically rendered in an unique, reverse proof finish! For 2010, the kooka sits high a tree branch, surveying its domain, while the cute koala is likewise arboreal, perched on a gum tree branch and munching on a eucalyptus leaf. The 2010 Kookaburra and 2010 Koala are both part of two highly desired, highly collectible series of one ounce beauties: the Pure Silver Kookaburras and the Pure Silver Koalas. The obverse design of both series changes each year, further enhancing their collectibility. The reverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of the British Commonwealth, of which Australia is a member. The Pure Silver Kookaburra and Pure Silver Koala each have a face value of one dollar and can be difficult to locate, much less in pristine condition, so we advise you to acquire the ones you need when you find them. Despite its appearance, the koala bear isn't really a bear at all, but rather a marsupial. Nonetheless it fascinates us because it's so darn cute - it looks like a living teddy bear! Appearances can be deceiving here, too, because koalas aren't cuddly, either. They are arboreal (tree-dwelling), so they have very strong, sharp claws for climbing (and their bite can cause injury, as well). The notoriety of the kookaburra's laugh, as well as its nervy antics, has been spread worldwide by the popular children's song "Kookaburra" by Marion Sinclair. Please see the end of this article for the complete lyrics to the song "Kookaburra", as well as a more in-depth natural history of this interesting feathered friend! Investment Note Only 1,500 of these special precious metals sets were issued! This is even lower than the 2,000 of last year's ANA Special Edition Set - and that set sold out in no time at all! Each set has a unique serial number guaranteeing its rarity. This is a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor on a truly scarce yet affordable set that combines two different, difficult to locate silver coins (each depicting an iconic Australian animal), while offering lots of ceiling for increase! Obverse - Koala A cute koala, perched on a gum tree branch, looks at us as he munches on a eucalyptus leaf. The Perth Mint "P" mint mark is judiciously hidden in the leaves of the branch at the 8:00 position near the rim. The legend 1 OZ 999 SILVER guarantees the weight and purity. Obverse - Kookaburra A laughing kookaburra perches on high on a tree branch. The legend 1 OZ 999 SILVER guarantees the weight and purity. The Perth Mint "P" mint mark is judiciously placed to the right of the tree branch, at the 4:00 position on the edge. The legend THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA and the date are also indicated. Reverse - Both Coins Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in crowned profile facing right. This portrait, featuring Her Majesty wearing a tiara and pearl earrings, was executed by the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend ELIZABETH II and denomination also appear. Packaging This attractive set is packaged in an oversize, full-color presentation pack that includes full specifications for each coin. An individually numbered certificate of authenticity is incorporated in the packaging. What's So Funny? The kookaburra is probably the best known bird of Australia. There are actually four species of kookaburra found in Australia and New Guinea. All are members of the Kingfisher family. Far and away the most familiar is the Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae). Kookaburras are famous for their unmistakable call, which sounds uncannily like loud, echoing human laughter - good-natured, if rather hysterical, merriment in the case of the Laughing Kookaburra; and maniacal cackling in the case of the slightly smaller Blue-Winged Kookaburra (D. leachii). The word "kookaburra" is borrowed from an aboriginal word of the Wiradjura language, "guuguubarra", which is onomatopoeic of (replicates) the avian's call. Kookaburras are carnivorous. They eat lizards, snakes, insects, mice and raw meat. The more socialized birds will accept handouts from humans and will take raw or cooked meat from open-air barbecues left unattended. Kookas are territorial, and often live with the partly grown chicks of the previous season. Koala Fun Facts You'd think that it couldn't get any more odd than a living stuffed animal that spends its entire life in, and only eats the leaves of, one kind of tree. If so, you'd be wrong - koalas are among Nature's most unusual and unique creatures. Here's a couple of other oddities about these fascinating fur balls. Koalas are often thought to be silent, and they are most of the time, but males have a very loud mating call that can be heard for a distance of about one kilometer away during the breeding season! When attacked, koalas may issue a loud cry, which is often likened to that of a human baby. The koala bear is one of the few mammals (other than primates) that has fingerprints. Koala fingerprints are remarkably similar to human fingerprints - even when viewed with an electron microscope, it can be quite difficult for an expert to distinguish between the two!
