The Piece Age Circa: c. 1980 Markings: unmarked, tested by XRF-Spectrometer, and guaranteed Tribe: lakota Main Stone: glass Main Stone Measurements/Color: multicolor Accent Stone: -- Accent Stone Measurements/Color: -- Stone Treatment: man-made Stone Cuts: polished beads Item Measurements:Wearable length: 7.0" LWidth: 0.85" W, along the top of the braceletBracelet Type: beaded Closure/Clasp Type: needs cord to be worn Notable Features:This Antique Vintage Native Lakota Ceremonial Beaded Tennis Bracelet is an exquisite example of indigenous craftsmanship, weighing 10.3 grams. Measuring 7 inches long and 0.85 inches wide, it showcases a vivid and intricate beadwork pattern in the center, typical of traditional Lakota artistry. The central diamond motifs, outlined with bold colors such as red, blue, yellow, and green, demonstrate an impressive level of skill, bringing forth the vibrant cultural heritage of the Lakota people. Each bead has been carefully stitched to create a rhythmic and eye-catching design that speaks of ceremonial significance and a deep connection to Native traditions. The bracelet is crafted with an earthy, brown fabric that appears to be rawhide, giving it a rustic and authentic feel. Rawhide was frequently used in traditional Native jewelry due to its durability and availability, and here it adds to the bracelet's tactile appeal. This material offers a unique contrast to the vibrant beadwork, grounding the colorful details in natural tones that reflect the traditional materials used in Lakota craftsmanship. The bracelet’s structure includes two holes on either side, which likely served as tie points for fastening it around the wrist, allowing the fringes to hang elegantly.Despite one of the holes being torn, this piece retains much of its charm, and the tear even adds a layer of character, suggesting its use and importance in a ceremonial setting. The fringes, which would have hung at the bottom of the wrist, were probably made from leather cords, a common feature in ceremonial Native jewelry. These elements help to tell the story of this piece’s past, evoking images of community gatherings, celebrations, and the spiritual connection these ceremonies often represented. The bracelet’s design draws heavily on traditional symbolism, with each color and pattern holding its own meaning within the Lakota culture. The diamond shapes often represent the four cardinal directions, reflecting a worldview that emphasizes balance and harmony. The combination of colors adds another layer of meaning, with each hue potentially symbolizing different aspects of the natural world, such as the sky, earth, sun, and water. This bracelet is not just an accessory—it is a piece of cultural heritage, imbued with meaning that goes beyond its aesthetic beauty. For collectors or anyone interested in Native American artifacts, this bracelet provides a fascinating glimpse into the artistry and ceremonial practices of the Lakota people. It is an example of how jewelry can be both beautiful and deeply meaningful, carrying stories and traditions from one generation to the next. The colorful beadwork and craftsmanship represent the skills passed down through generations, making this piece a remarkable and treasured item for any collection. The bracelet’s slightly worn condition serves as a testament to its authenticity and its journey through time. This bracelet offers an opportunity not only to own a piece of history but also to connect with the culture and craftsmanship of the Native Lakota. Its vibrant colors, intricate beadwork, and traditional materials create a beautiful harmony that is both visually striking and historically enriching. Though it shows signs of wear, those imperfections speak to its genuine past, and with a little restoration, it could once again take its place as a proud adornment, celebrating a rich cultural heritage.Damage: Age appropriate wear. Two holes on either side of the bracelet where I'm guessing cord would have been tied to fasten the bracelet with the fringes hanging along the bottom of the wrist - one of the holes is torn through the side. There is also one small brown strand sticking out, but it doesn't affect anything structurally with the bracelet. *This listing is for the item only. All display boxes and/or photography props do not come with your purchase.* The History This beautiful piece was made by a very talented Native American silversmith. It features handcrafted silversmith work throughout. Antique Native American jewelry is very rare to find. This is due to these pieces being made for reservation and personal use before the tourist trade became popular. Very few pieces were made and even less survived to today. The concept of Pawn, Old Pawn, and Dead Pawn Native American Jewelry came to be in the 1800s. During this time, trading posts had become commonplace for Native Americans to go and exchange food, tools, and other materials with Colonists. Essentially, banks would loan the shop owners money which was then invested into loans for Native Americans in exchange for their jewelry. When a loan wasn’t repaid, the item became known as either “Old Pawn” or “Dead Pawn.” Domestic US: All items ship within two business days of receiving payment.
