Description: Veronica’s Veil painted by Lorenzo Hernandez, attribution by James Caswell. Special provenance: This retablo was selected to be a part of the exhibition “Faith and Private Devotion, Retablos, Santos and Animas Solas from the Stearns Collection”. The retablo is documented in full color in the 134 page exhibition catalog, page 111. This “Veronica’s Veil” retablo is filled with symbolism from top to bottom: The ladder used to take Jesus off the cross, the hammer and nails, the soldiers’ dice…. Although not mentioned in the New Testament, Veronica was said to have helped Jesus on his way to Calvary by wiping the sweat from his face with a towel. An image of his face miraculously appeared on the piece of cloth. Veronica’s Veil: Oil on tin / 9 3/4 x 13” / ca 1895 By Lorenzo Hernandez (attribution by James Caswell). Condition: Very good condition for its age with minor loss of paint as shown in the photographs. The retablo has developed a nice patina over the years of devotion by candle light so the colors are not bright. Please study the photographs closely.
